My latest knob twiddler – NI Kontrol 1 – from Santa, a nice compact device for every sonic situation, but not designed in Japan.
In recent years the gadgets – particularly audio & internet interfaces – that have rocked my world, besides cameras, have been from Europe & USA.
Japan hasn't made a killer gadget for a long time. Japan had aways been behind with internet connectivity. Japan has never been a dominant computer maker. The iPod is a case in example. In the early 90s Sony Walkman ruled, but Apple has displaced Sony as an innovator in consumer electronics.
Why didn't the Japanese invent the iPod ? Many commentators are suggesting that Japan's rigid corporate culture stifles lateral thinking innovation. The strict hierarchies of Japanese companies discourage people with radical new ideas and individualistic risk taking.
The Japanese are best at team endeavour. They have always been skillful at miniaturising and embellished copying from foreign invention.
